Ontario Golf Course Review

Eagles Nest Golf Club

Eagles Nest Golf Club is a Doug Carrick design that opened to a great deal of fanfare in 2004. Since that time, this dramatic links-style layout has consistently ranked as one of the best golf courses in Ontario. True to form, Carrick used his extensive experience with link-style course design and his vivid imagination to sculpt a world-class tract of golf over 235 acres using many of the rugged features left over from the reclaimed gravel pit that used to exist on the property.

The owners of Eagles Nest spared no expense in the construction of the 36,000 square foot clubhouse. This beautiful structure houses a well-stocked & professionally staffed golf shop and luxurious locker rooms for both men and women.  lago ("Ontario's best-kept culinary secret" - Toronto Life Eating & Drinking 2005 Edition) features upscale cuisine (lunch & dinner) and a comprehensive wine list that rivals any of Toronto's fine dining establishments. Jim and Garry's Pub is a warm and inviting establishment offering golfer's fare (nachos, burgers, etc.) and friendly libations from sunup to sundown. Function space includes: The Great Hall, which is fully equipped with a bar and audio visual equipment for events of up to 250 guests, and The Nest that can accommodate up to 60 guest for business or family events. The staff at Eagles Nest is friendly, well-trained and very helpful.  It's so nice to see so many smiles at a golf course!

The practice facility at Eagles Nest consists of a targeted grass range, a putting green and a chipping green with sand bunkers. Lessons and clinics are available with a CPGA Professional.  Comfortable golf carts are well appointed with club protectors and coolers with water.

Immaculately conditioned tee boxes, fairways and greens are bent grass, while the rough consists of a mix of bluegrass fringe with deep fescue blanketing the dunes that frame the fairways. Dramatic bunkering is found throughout the course, over 125 bunkers in all. Some are deep, nasty sodwall pot bunkers while others are freeform bunkers rimmed with unforgiving fescue (some of these freeform bunkers are quite expansive and intimidating). Water hazards are located on holes 10, 16, 17 and 18.

The layout of the course, along with elevation changes and bunker placements make this tract a difficult one - especially from the Eagle tees which total 7,476 yards with a slope of 141 and a rating of 76.1. The Black, Gold, and White tee boxes are 7,085, 6680 and 6225 yards respectively with slopes and ratings of 136/73.9, 132/72.0 and 127/70.2. Two sets of forward tees can be found with the Green tees measuring 5,677 yards with a slope of 135 and rating of 73.0, while the very forgiving Bronze tees are 5,183 yards with a slope of 119 and a rating of 70.0. All tee boxes are marked with a measurement to the center of the green, the fairways and paved cart paths are marked at 200, 150 and 100 yards and sprinkler heads and catch basins are measured to the center of the green. The selection from six different pin placement positions is posted daily.

While the layout at Eagles Nest takes advantage of the rugged landscape left behind from the former sand and gravel operation Holes three through seven offer dramatic elevation changes with valley and woodland vistas, while spoil banks create spectacular backdrops for holes 12 to 15. The fairways & greens throughout are undulating and sloped and approaches to many of the well-bunkered greens are either narrow or uphill. Some carries off the tee (with the exception of the Bronze tees which eliminate most of the carries) are intimidating - either over expansive bunkering or, in the case of #9, deep crevasses. Bunkers that line the fairway on doglegs look deceptively dangerous from the tee boxes, but many of the large freeform bunkers are out of reach for the average golfer. This will cause most players to make some thoughtful and interesting club selections. Ultimately, if the sight of bunkers makes you cringe, this course may not be for you, but if you rally to make some very remarkable, strategic golf shots then you'll absolutely love this tract.
