WATSONS GLEN GOLF COURSE (905-655-9187 or 888-854-1892)
Ontario Golf Course Review 9/21/05
One of Durham Regions top 18-hole public facilities, Watson's Glen Golf Course is a challenging and true test of
golf on a course that is spacious and fun to play. Conditions are impeccable from tee to green and the 18th hole
at Watson's Glen was given the 2005, 2006 & 2007 Golfers Choice Award as one of the top holes in the Greater Toronto Area.
Watson's Glen is an 18-hole Kevin Holmes designed championship layout that is open for public play. The
course is situated on approximately 200 undulating acres on the Oak Ridges Moraine, and features nicely
conditioned bent grass fairways, tees and greens. Considered one of the Durham region's premier 18-hole
public facilities, this gently rolling design includes 11 ponds and 90 sand bunkers, and provides a good balance of challenge and playability.
Walking is always allowed on this reasonably priced layout, which features four sets of tee areas. Golfers have a
choice of playing to distances and slopes measuring 7072 yards/139 slope, 6513 yards/129 slope, 5983
yards/123 slope and 5211 yards with a 112 slope from the forward tees. The ladies' rating is 138 from the whites
and 119 from the red tees. Sprinkler heads are abundant and provide measurements to the center of the green, and color coded flags indicate front, middle and back hole locations.
A yardage guide booklet or GPS is also available for a nominal fee, providing valuable information on the distances to the hazards and putting complexes. Each new 2007 Club Car cart is equipped with GPS,
windshields, ball washers, divot mix, rear covers protecting golf clubs and bags during inclement weather.
Players can warm up on the grass range and a short game area with putting and chipping green is also on
property. The clubhouse at Watson's Glen features a pro shop, and snack area with outdoor patio.
The 18th hole has been honoured with the 2005, 2006 & 2007 Golfer's Choice Award, as one of the top 18 golf holes in the Greater Toronto Area. This par five is the courses # 5 handicap as it plays to 563 yards from the tips
, 523 from the blues, 500 from the whites and 465 for the forward tees. The long, narrow fairway is separated by
a water hazard about 170 yards from the green. The pond comes into play on the approach as well, as it rests
perilously close along the right side. This is a true risk/reward approach, with the day's pin placement also a factor in the difficulty of the shot.
Watson's Glen is a great walking course, but pull and driving carts are also available. The interesting design and
fine conditioning, along with a great staff and clubhouse amenities, make this a good value for the GTA. For more info, visit our page for the property with direct link to their website by clicking here.
