Thundering Waters Golf Club (905-357-6000)
Ontario Golf Course Review - July, 2006
Located just 1500 yards from the Canadian Horseshoe Falls in famous Niagara Falls, Ontario, Thundering
Waters Golf Club is the first John Daly Signature course in Canada and a feather in the cap of course architect
Bo Danoff. Although it just opened in September of 2005, this course has the look and feel of a well-heeled private club.
John Daly collaborated with Bo Danoff to create a course that would reflect his style of play and offer guests a
chance to tackle holes that are mostly reserved for the big hitters. Danoff also endeavored to make Thundering
Waters appear as if nature had placed it there - a gift from the Gods - and he succeeded admirably. This course
winds its way through deeply wooded areas reminiscent of great northern courses and gentile southern tracts
then breaks open into rugged hills covered with fescue where true links style holes present cavernous bunkers and large undulating greens.
Thundering Waters is a marvelous combination of long holes and tight, beautifully designed par 3's. Over 110
bunkers are strategically placed and water comes into play on 10 holes. The Championship/Daly tees play 7
,208 yards with a rating of 74.9 and a slope of 149, and are a significant challenge for professional golfers.
Three sets of middle tees at 6,730 yards, 6,302 yards, and 5,454 yards with slope/ratings of 145/72.1, 133/69.9,
and 123/66.8 respectively provide guests with a fair choice to play an enjoyable round while still offering
significant carries and some long holes. The forward tees at 4,814 yards with a slope/rating of 117/63.4 (men) and 121/69.0 (women) also provide a fair challenge.
The course is well marked with 100, 150 and 200 yard stakes in the center of the fairway and sprinkler heads
measured to the center of the green. A small flag on the pin indicates front, middle and back pin placements.
Bent grass greens are immaculate, mostly large, and intimidating, with slopes and undulations. Fairways are
well manicured and wind in and around nicely sculpted, but hazardously placed, bunkering.
On property is grass range as well as a practice green. The aesthetically pleasing clubhouse features locker
rooms w/showers and a very large, well-stocked golf shop with many of John Daly's signature paraphernalia and
clothing available. A licensed snack bar with a patio offers burgers, hotdogs and chicken sandwiches as well as
a good variety of local, premium and imported beer. There is currently no restaurant on site, but with the prolific
dining possibilities so close in Niagara Falls, it is really not necessary. A banquet tent for groups of up to 250 is on property and staff is professionally trained.
Thundering Waters has numerous group package programs - some that include transportation, accommodations, scenic tours, dinner, prizes and keepsakes. Various memberships are also available with no
initiation fee.
The challenging and diverse layout, the opportunity to take many risk/reward shots , and the intimate feel of
Thundering Waters ensures that every guest will have a thoroughly enjoyable and memorable game of golf. Welcome to Canada, John!
