THE ROYAL ASHBURN GOLF CLUB (905-686-1121)
Ontario Golf Course Review
The Royal Ashburn Golf Club is located a few miles west of the town of Ashburn (approx. 20 minutes north of Whitby in the Durham Region) and after 40 years of maturing, this
property is well-groomed and picturesque. It is a very challenging course that plays over 7000 yards from their championship tees, white tees play over 6500 yards, the red tees
play close to 6000 and their front tees play at 5760.
The opening hole is a great hole to start your game. It is a 496 yd slight dogleg to the right so place your tee shot a bit to the left so you can see the green on your second shot.
Play the second hole straight down the middle. Water comes into play if you hit to the left. The approach shot is slightly uphill and most lies will be uneven. This is a tough hole if
you don't play it smart. Lynde Creek that meanders across the fairway on the 486 yard par 5 third hole forces you to hit short. Swing hard on your second shot and you'll have a
short wedge to the green and a birdie. The first par 3 on the course is #4 at 139 yards. This is a beautiful hole with water on the left and the creek in the front. If you're going to
make a mistake...make it right! The number one handicap at Royal Ashburn is the fifth hole. A par 4, 390 yards with water everywhere. We found it best to keep to the right and go
long...good luck! You'll find a slight dogleg to the right on the par 4, 405 yard #6. You'll need a good drive for a decent approach to the green (which is guarded by bunkers). Most of
the trouble is located on the left side behind the green. #7 is as easy uphill 156 yard par 3 while a more difficult par 345 yard par 4 awaits you at #8. Although it is short and
downhill all the way, the approach shot can be tricky. The right side of the green is wet while the left side is well-bunkered (if you're going to err, better on the beach than in the
drink!). #9 is as easy 351 yard par 4. A great feature of this tee box is the kiosk where you can order food from the lounge's full menu. Its ready when you get there!
The back nine begins with a par 4, 412 yard dogleg to the right. A good tee shot will get you past the tree line on the right. This hole plays long! The next two holes are relatively
easy if you play with precision - the par 4, 327 yard 11th has water past the 200 yard mark which can be easily avoided and the long par 4, 407 yard 12th is a slight dogleg to the
left. Number 13 is very beautiful par 3, 166 yd. hole. Beware of Lynde Creek which is hidden from the tee box and which surrounds the green. This hole demands the right club
and accuracy. The 534 yard, par 5 fourteenth lets you break out your big clubs. The green can be easily reached in three. You'll find the number two handicap on the par 4, 449
yard 15th. There is lots of room to drive off the tee, but with a good distance to go to the green, and water on the right, we played this hole like a par 5, took our bogies and ran! An
easy 151 yard par 3 followed by a relaxing 524 yard par 5 takes you to the finishing hole wish is a par 4, 356 yard dogleg left. This is a great closing hole - slightly uphill. Keep to
the right on your drive and you'll be in the clubhouse in no time.
The Royal Ashburn facility offers everything that a golfer needs. It has valet bag drop, a full driving range, beautiful practice green, practice bunker and chipping area, fully licensed
snack bar, halfway house & a beverage cart. In the clubhouse you will find a complete pro shop as well as Bunker's Lounge for dining.
The banquet facilities at Royal Ashburn are very elegant. Their beautiful gardens offer great backdrops for weddings. The Compton Room can host up to 250 guests and it
includes a sundeck which overlooks the golf course. On the main level of the clubhouse is the Highland Room that can seat 60 guests and the Ashburn Room that can seat 160
guests. The decor and the service at the complex makes you feel like royalty.
Royal Ashburn is a deceivingly challenging course. Proper club selection and thoughful play will reward most golfers. We found that the Royal Ashburn was truly a Royal challenge
and a Royal treat, the memory of this course will stay with us for a long time. A must play for anyone living in or visiting the Greater Toronto Area.
