Ontario Golf Course Review - June 8, 2005

Heritage Hills Golf Club

Heritage Hills Golf Club

Heritage Hills Golf Club,  Barrie, Ontario's newest 18 hole championship golf course is quickly becoming a favorite among the locals as well as gaining a reputation for being one of Ontario's true player's courses.  Designed by Rene Muyleart and opened on July 1, 2004, Heritage Hills is an outstanding layout that features a wonderful combination of wide open links-style holes and forested holes with tree-lined fairways with strategically placed bunkers and swales that provide a challenge to every level of golfer.

The fairways offer large landing areas, with many holes demanding carries over environmental sensitive areas that line Willow Creek as it winds through the 183 acre course.  The terrain is quite hilly with some elevation changes, but the course is still walkable. The bent grass greens are immaculate and expansive; some are two-tiered while other  undulations and slopes that make for some interesting pin placements.

Over 70 bunkers dot the course with the majority of them protecting the greens.  Number 12 has the only distinct water hazard, but carries over Willow Creek are required on four holes.

Heritage Hills is a well marked course.  Yardage blocks can be found in the center of the fairway at 200 (blue), 150 (white) and 100 (red). A small green and white flag is staked at the 150 yard mark and sprinkler heads provide measurement to the center of the green.  Color coded flags indicate front, middle and back pin placements.  A professional yardage book can be purchased which offers information on yardages, bunkers, mounding and green slopes. It also offers tips on play for each hole and is a valuable tool.

The property offers a grass range with target greens and a nice size practice green. Electric carts are available for rent with or without club protection. The clubhouse is temporary but houses a nicely stocked pro shop and a snack bar and restaurant that provides indoor dining as well as a nice size outdoor patio. An event pavillion provides space for outings and gatherings of up to 80. A permanent clubhouse is is scheduled to open in 2007.

On our visit in June of 2005, we found this course - not yet a year old - to be in great shape.  Some of the fairways are still coming in, but this is to be expected due to the infancy of the course as well as the very rough winter we had this year.   Heritage Hills has assured us that conditioning will be impeccable on this course, and if the greens are an example, we believe this to be true.

Located only minutes off Highway 400 just north of Barrie, Ontario, Heritage Hills is only a 45 minute drive from Toronto and conveniently located near the Muskokas.  If you love the game of golf - love to strategize and enjoy a variety of golf shots, you will love this course.
