Deer Creek South - Sapphire & Emerald (905) 427-7737
Ontario Golf Course Review - June 16, 2006
Located just off Taunton Road in Ajax, Ontario, Deer Creek Golf & Banquet Facility is comprised of 45 holes of
championship golf and a state-of-the-art clubhouse that features expansive banquet facilities with over 50,000 sq
ft of pristine space with rooms to suit from 12 to 1,200 guests, a well-stocked pro shop, shower and locker facilities for both men and women, a snack shop with a pub, and a first class restaurant.
On property (a short drive away) is the Deer Creek Academy that features CPGA professional trainers, an
expansive practice area that contains a driving range with five laser-measured target greens, four greenside
bunkers, a fairway bunker and more. A 9-hole executive course is also part of the Academy. Toronto Sun
readers have voted The Academy as the "Best Teaching Facility" and "Best Practice Facility" for 5 years running - 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2006, in the Toronto Sun Golf Guide.
The Deer Creek property is immaculately maintained and beautifully landscaped making the golfing experience
here a visual pleasure. Bent grass greens, tees and fairways are well-manicured. The staff at Deer Creek are
friendly and helpful in every respect - they offer everything from water and directions to suggestions on method of
play for each 9. Scorecards as well as very informative yardage guides are provided before each round. Red,
white and blue stakes and plates in the middle of the fairway designate 100, 150 and 200 yard measurements and front, middle and back pin placements are indicated by red, white and blue flags.
Deer Creek South - Sapphire and Emerald
The South Course at Deer Creek Golf and Banquet Facility combines the Sapphire nine and the Emerald nine.
This par 71 course provides three sets of tees with the tips playing 6045 yards (slope 118; rating 67.8), the
middle tees are a very comfortable 5644 yards with a slope of 115 and a 66.9 rating, while the forward tees offer a 5060 yard course with a slope of 129 and a rating of 69.4.
Although the course takes advantage of rolling landscape and stands of pine and hardwoods, there is an open
feel to this tract that can give you a false sense that the course will be easily conquered. The architects slyly
placed bunkers and made use of the meandering creek and treestands to incorporate a challenge for duffers of all levels.
The idyllic concept of this course is sometimes dotted with massive hydro towers that provide a stark contrast to
the peaceful landscape, yet conversely enhance the backdrop of this pastoral layout. Some of the par threes play directly into and under these towers.
The South Course offers a beautiful par 3 #4 on the Sapphire with a shallow green protected by water (first photo in this review) and the #6 par 5 is a very challenging double dogleg with fairway that is split by the creek
and a green that is also protected by the creek. Back to back par 5's (the 5th and 6th holes) on the Emerald
course play uphill and downhill respectively and provide ample landing areas and good birdie chances. We
found the conditions to be excellent with nicely landscaped areas and well manicured tees, greens and fairways.
It is easily walkable at a comfortable pace and is visually stimulating. Deer Creek South is a favorite for tournaments in the area because of its playability and layout.
