COURSE REVIEW

Calabogie Highlands Golf Club - Calabogie, Ontario - 1-877-224-GOLF - offers a 18 hole championship golf course in the midst of breathtaking scenery overlooking Calabogie Lake.  You get a good idea of the layout of the land as you are driving to the clubhouse. Aesthetics are important here. The course meanders through a series of hills and valleys that are well-treed and have quaint country gardens interspersed in the layout. Most of the teeboxes and greens on this course are elevated. There are three setsView from #14 teebox - typical landscaping at Calabogie of tee boxes. The back tees play at 6764, middle tees at 6328 and the front tees at 5546.  Although the course is perfect for the average golfer, play from the back tees can present a challenge even to a scratch player.  A few serious doglegs on this course with water and sand coming into play on many holes make this course interesting and enjoyable.

Calabogie - View of #3 green from TeeboxThere are two signature holes at Calabogie Highlands. The first is hole #3, a 142-yard par 3 with an island green.  From the tee box it is impossible to tell that water surrounds the green; the only hint to this is a small bridge on the right. You have a downhill shot with Calabogie Lake in the background providing a fair bit of distraction.  We watched quite a few duffers drown their balls at this hole.  Concentrate, use the Hole #3 - A little closer.right club, and you'll be well rewarded. The second signature hole is #15.  This is a gorgeous 537-yard par 5 that plays through a small valley. Elevations are severe at both the tee and the green. The fairway begins expansively but narrows past some water and begins an undulating uphill climb toward the green. This is a very challenging par 5 and a well-placed tee shot is important if you plan to par this hole. The green Hole #15 from teeboxon this course is fairly large with a few undulations, but it offers a fair chance for a one-putt from wherever you placed the ball.  Other holes of note: #9 - a par 4 that plays to large downhill green with water in play; #14 - a long par 3 on top of a hill with a beautiful view of Calabogie Lake and the surrounding area; and #5 a par 4 that plays to an oversized uphill green that is surrounded by bunkers and moguls.

Calabogie also has a 9 hole course that is great for a practice run, for working on your short game and for people who are learning the game. They have a driving range and a very well stocked pro shop with great, friendly and helpful staff (Bob & Theresa).

The course is well marked and the Fairways are in great condition. The greens are very well maintained. Their golf prices are a super deal at $27 per round (2001 prices). A comparable course in Toronto would cost triple. We found that Calabogie Highlands Golf Club is one of the great courses in Ontario and is a must play for folks living in, near or travelling to the Ottawa Valley.  Take Highway 17 (The Transcanada) to the Calabogie turnoff (Hwy 511) between Renfrew and Arnprior and follow the signs to Barryvale Road.
