BRAEBEN GOLF COURSE (905-615-4653)
Ontario Golf Course Review 9/21/05
BraeBen Golf Course in Mississauga is an 18-hole 6415 yard Ted Baker design patterned after the highlands
courses of Scotland. On property is the Championship Course, plus the nine-hole par three Academy Course,
with holes ranging in length from 100 to 200 yards. Over 25 bunkers filled with "Temisca" sand are situated
around the green complexes of this short course. There also is a double-ended driving range, chipping green and Teaching Academy.
The clubhouse features a fully stocked pro shop, men's and ladies' locker rooms, and a large, 200-seat glassed
enclosed dining room with built in dance floor. The banquet/outing facilities can accommodate groups of various
sizes with specially tailored menus, and meeting/conference rooms are also available. This combination makes BraeBen a perfect location for outings and special events.
The highlands style Championship Course was built on a landfill, and features holes that ascend up to almost 80
feet from the tee areas, before spiraling down. Four sets of tees play to distances and slopes measuring 6415
yards/130 slope, 6003 yards/124 slope, 5501 yards with a 119 slope for men and 127 for women, and 4886 yards with a 107 slope for men and 122 for ladies playing from the forward tees.
The yardage marking system includes small flags to indicate front, middle and back hole locations, plus red,
white and blue stakes along the fairways near the 100, 150 and 200 yard areas. The layout is wide open with
plenty of landing area off the tees, along the bent grass fairways that lead to undulating putting surfaces that are
often protected by pot bunkers. There are 78 sand traps situated near the landing zones or greenside, with water on play on just 1 hole - the par three 7th.
BraeBen opened to wonderful reviews in June of 2005. Ted Baker has called it his most challenging and most
unique design. The layout incorporates several holes from the Brittania Hills executive course, which occupied
part of the property from 1999 - 2003, and has been hailed for creating an environmentally sound development -
a hallmark for urban planning. Golfers will encounter a dramatic terrain, with native high grasses, gnarly trees and
shrubs and abundant pot bunkers - all reminiscent of golf's traditional early designs. Wind and elevation changes
add to the challenge and allure of playing this course. For more info, visit our page for BraeBen, with direct link to their website by clicking here.
